Real Time Traffic Information

New European regulations regarding the availability of traffic data will give the digital traffic system a major boost. Holders of data sources are obliged to offer this data in real time and of good quality. Service providers must then also process this data in their services, provided the data is of good quality and usable. The regulations aim at a dialogue between data holder and data user, in which both parties are responsible in the process for the quality of the data.

The advantages for road authorities are that they can have some influence on route choices by service providers, more road safety through services such as ISA, and allowing a message to reach a road user without always requiring a physical information panel (VMS). But it does require qualitative and current data – Real Time – and therefore the necessary efforts to make the data qualitatively and real time available.
